When it comes time to replace exterior siding, homeowners need to be armed with all the right questions before talking to any potential contractors. This is a person you’ll be getting to know well over the course of your project, from the initial measurements and bidding, to the purchase of materials, time spent onsite, and any follow-up issues. It’s no exaggeration to say that your chosen siding contractor can literally make or break the project. For a big investment on your home, take time to interview a few different companies, then listen to your gut before choosing.
Asking the Right Questions Helps You Choose the Best
Will the contractor handle all of the work? Ask the contractor if they plan to subcontract any part of the project. If there is a subcontractor involved, will the contractor take responsibility for work completed by the sub? Who will be responsible for follow up in the case of any problems?
Do they offer a warranty on their work?
What are the contractor’s certifications and licenses? Reputable siding contractors care enough to become certified and licensed professionals, showing their expert status in installing various materials. Most manufacturers have a list of certified contractors for each geographic area.
Does the company obtain the necessary permits before beginning work?
Does the company have insurance? You don’t want to be responsible for any accidents that happen on your property during the installation. Make sure the company is insured and that it is stated in your contract.
How is their customer service? Even your initial phone call can give clues as to the quality of the company as a whole. Are the employees you’re dealing with courteous and professional?
PRO TIP: One thing to keep in mind is that truly good contractors are in high demand. They are busy for a reason. So be patient. It may be the case that you’ll have to wait several weeks before your project can begin.
Narrow it Down, then Get into the Details
Carefully read the manufacturer’s and contractor’s warranties.
Understand their cancellation policy. If they don’t have one, make sure to ask for one in writing.
Ask for references. Even better than references provided by the contractor directly, are ones you find on your own. Have any homes in your neighborhood recently been resided by your chosen contractor? Why not get to know your neighbors over a plate of cookies, and ask them about their experience?
Check with the Better Business Bureau. Work with contractors who are listed on BBB.org and have good scores. BBB can provide you with a reliability report and tell you how long the contractor has been in business.
Ask about during- and post-installation cleanup. Discuss the extent of cleanup the contractor does during and after installation. Who disposes of the materials and waste? What kind of cleanup is done at the end of each day during installation?
Take a look at their contract. If there is anything unclear, don’t hesitate to ask. Don’t be afraid to ask for more stipulations as needed.
