You’ve probably heard people talking about or you’ve read about creating curb appeal. But what’s the big hype? Why should you care about curb appeal? Well, let’s take a closer look at this concept.

Maybe you’re trying to sell your house and nobody is giving it a glance. Or maybe you live in a neighborhood where all your neighbor’s homes look like something out of a magazine and your house looks like a tornado passed through. This is where curb appeal comes in. What you’re actually wanting to do is to create a visually appealing home exterior design. Well, that’s what curb appeal is!

Now, let’s go deeper and really define it.

What is curb appeal?

We hear this term all the time: “your house needs curb appeal,” “ways to increase your curb appeal,” “the best curb appeal trends.” But what does “curb appeal” really mean?

Merriam-Webster’s dictionary says: “the visual attractiveness of a house as seen from the street.” Curb appeal creates a visually pleasing aesthetic with your home’s exterior design.

What’s the goal of curb appeal?

The goal of good curb appeal is to keep the onlooker’s attention for a significant period of time. By creating something that is visually appealing, your home becomes something that others want to view. This is especially beneficial when selling your house. But even when your home is not on the market, it’s just nice to create a space that is welcoming and comforting to those who live there as well as those who visit.

How do we calculate what is “visually appealing”?

We all have our own idea of what looks good. But there are certain standards that conventional wisdom dictates to be the ideal for how your home should appear. Some of these concepts are basic design principles that extend beyond home exterior design and into all forms of art, such as line, shape, color, texture, balance, and symmetry. All of these principles translate to the home.

By utilizing design principles to create a visually appealing house, you’re creating wonderful curb appeal. The idea is to make your house look appealing to those passing by on the street and when you do that, you increase the value of your home and create an inviting living space for your family and friends.
