Fill Your Garden With the Best Fall Plants in the Bay Area

Aug 8, 2016

As the summer months come to end, it's time to begin thinking about your fall garden. What should you plan tin order to get the best haul come harvest? In this blog, we will be taking a month-by-month look at which plants will thrive in each of the autumn months.

At the beginning of the month, you should focus on cleaning out your garden from the summer harvest and prepping it for your new plants. To do this, completely remove the plants and re-fertilize the soil. Once your garden is ready, begin with plants from the following list. These plants are also drought-resistant so they'll need less maintenance over the fall and winter months.

  • Achillea
  • Anigozanthos
  • Bergenia
  • Coreopsis
  • Echinacea
  • Euphorbia
  • Helleborus
  • Heuchera
  • Penstemon
  • Sedum

Though it's usually better to plant earlier if possible, planting the above perennials may also be done in early November if necessary. One important thing to remember, however, is to avoid fertilizing dormant plants. If you have plants that will not be budding until spring, hold back the fertilizer until they start growing again.

Herb planting can also begin in November. We suggest basil, oregano and parsley. These are tasty herbs that can be used in a variety of recipes.

If December temperatures in your area are dropping below, freezing at night, do not prune your trees or bushes. Instead, wait until the temperature is consistently above freezing to avoid causing damage to the plant.

As long as temperatures stay above freezing, December is also a good time to begin planting some varieties of vegetables from seeds. You'll want to pick hardy varieties such as lettuce, spinach, broccoli and carrots.

Remember, local climates can vary across a city so be sure to contact a gardening professional if you have any questions about your garden.
