7 Home and Yard Care Mistakes to Avoid This Fall

Just because the days are getting shorter and colder, it doesn’t mean that it’s time to forget about home and yard care. There are some important tasks that shouldn’t be forgotten this fall in order to make sure your house and yard are in tip top shape as we come into winter.

1. Don’t forget about your lawn

As some moisture returns to the ground again, your lawn may see some more rapid growth before winter hits. This means that it still needs your tender loving care. Keep it mowed (but not too short) and look into fertilizing. A lawn that’s fertilized in the fall will help it from getting damaged during the winter. Check out more specific lawn care tips and do a little research at local nurseries or home improvement stores for local growing guides to help you provide the best upkeep with the soil and climate you have.

2. Don’t leave dead plants in your yard

It’s that time of year where your annual plants have lived their life and are no longer providing your yard with the colorful disposition they once had. So clear those bad boys out! It’s better to have some open space with dirt or bark than lifeless old plants to greet your guest and passers-by.

3. Don’t let the weeds grow

You worked so hard to keep the weeds out of your yard this summer, don’t let that hard work go to waste by letting those buggers take root now! Weeds compete with your plants for food and water, not to mention they totally wreck the curb appeal of your landscaping. They can also shorten the life of your hardscaping when they sprout between the cracks.

4. Don’t leave all the planting for the spring

Fall is a great time to start thinking about the flowers you want for next spring. Check with your local nursery to find out which bulbs are best to plant now. Come spring time, you won’t have to worry quite as much about planting.

5. Don’t neglect your tools

Once you finish all the yard work you’re going to do this fall, make sure you store your tools properly. Don’t leave them out to get ruined by the elements and don’t put them away dirty. Make sure all your tools are properly working and cleaned from dirt and debri to be stored in a covered, dry space. This way, your tools will be just as ready as you are to get back out in the garden next spring.

6. Don’t let your pool collect debris

We know you may not be using your pool much anymore, but don’t let that keep you from doing regular maintenance. During the fall, continue to check chemical levels, clear out fallen debris, leaves and bugs. You’ll be thankful you did come spring time.

7. Don’t forget about weatherproofing your house

Last, but definitely not least, make sure your home is weatherproofed. Check your roof, windows and other weak areas around your home. Check for gaps and drafts coming from doors and windows. Take the proper steps to seal and insulate them. Make sure your roof, gutters and chimney are all in tip top shape too.

We know that a cared-for home makes for happy residents. So make sure your home is properly taken care of this fall. If these tips aren’t cutting it for your home, consider contacting Peninsula Siding Company for a new exterior siding update.
