5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Siding

Apr 10, 2017

Due to the specialized knowledge required to install siding properly, replacing it can be a substantial investment. Most homeowners avoid updates of this nature unless absolutely necessary. So how do you know it’s time to retire your home’s siding? Here are 5 tell-tale signs that your siding needs to be replaced:

  1. Evident damage. Either from the sun, wind, or storms, your siding can take a beating. Can you tell that the damage has taken a toll? If there’s obvious damage to your siding, you should have a professional assess it, so if new siding is needed, you can rest assured it will be installed correctly.
  2. Bulging and bubbling panels. Do you see bulging, protruding panels? This could be a sign of underlying damage. When water penetrates siding, either from improperly placed water barriers or damage to a panel, serious problems may be just around the corner. When water freezes, it expands, creating even more damage to the siding. It can also cause this next issue we’ll address.
  3. Visible mold and mildew. If either is found inside or outside your home, there is a moisture issue. Inspect your home to find the source, and quickly! As moisture accumulates, rot can occur, causing even more damage. If mold and mildew are found inside, look at the outside of the home in the same area to ensure there is no damage causing water to penetrate indoors.
  4. Increase in heating and cooling costs. While not necessarily a siding-related issue, if no issues are found in the insulation, heating/cooling systems, etc., siding may be the next place to look. A siding expert can ensure there are no major issues in the siding that may be causing heat to escape or enter the home.
  5. Frequent repairs have become the norm. Do you find you’re fixing cracks, filling holes, or repainting your siding more often than before? It may be time to retire your current siding. Regular maintenance is part of caring for your siding, but constant repairs are a sign that new siding is needed.
